Abstract
Background/:/AIMS: There were few epidemiologic surveys of rural communities on the positivities of hepatitis B viral markers. This study was performed to evaluate the positivities of HBsAg and anti-HBs in the rural area of Chonnam Province in Korea and to get the baseline data for the Rural health cohort study.

Methods: Nine hundred and forty five persons who have been resided in the six rural towns near Lake Juam were selected by multi-stage clutser sampling method from January to February in 1995. HBsAg and anti-HBs were tested by microparticle enzyme immunoassy (MEIA) and alanineaminotrasferase (ALT) was tested by enzyme kinetic method.

Results: The positivities of HBsAg and anti-HBs in all subjects were 9.1% and 53.8%, respectively. The positivity of HBsAg in male (10.6%) was not significantly higher than in female (8.2%). The positivity of anti-HBs in male was 54.5% and also not significantly higher than in female (53.3%). In 86 HBsAg positive cases 68.6% showed normal ALT(< or =35U/L) and remaining 31.4% showed elavated ALT(>35U/L).

Conclusions:The positivities of HBsAg and anti-HBs showed no significant change compared to those reported in the late 1980¡¯s.
